Year End Reflection: Part Two

Describe your vision for yourself in pursuing higher education

I intend on going to the University of Southern California's film school. I have been wanting to attend USC since the 7th grade when I first realized my passion for film making. I know that USC only accepts the best of the best students, so that is why I have been pushing myself since I entered high school to get the best grades, SAT scores and as much community service as possible.

I hope to get my bachelors degree in film/cinema design while minoring in business administration and management. I hope to then peruse my masters degree in the same major, but that depends on if I get accepted to their graduate program, if I have any job offers etc.


What in the world do you care about and what are you doing about it?


I care about film making. I have been in love with it since the 7th grade when I watched the behind the scenes features of the movie The Incredibles. I have been working towards my dream of becoming a film director ever since them by putting my all into every film-based project we were assigned in school, trying to turn as many of my projects as I could into a film based project, (example: Media Saves the Beach) and entering as many of my movies as possible into film competitions and festivals. So far, one of my films has won an IVIE award and an award at the San Diego County Fair, (it is now being shown in multiple elementary school throughout the country). I entered another film into the IVIE Awards, (I also presented an award at the IVIE Awards) and I just entered a film into the San Diego Film Festival, so now i am waiting to hear back from them.


What four-year college/s are you interested in and why?

The colleges I am interested in are:
  1. USC: University of Southern California is known to be one of the top film schools in the country/world. I have been interested in USC since I was in the 7th grade when I first realized that I wanted to be a film director/producer. USC also has one of the top business schools in the country, and since I intend on minoring in business it seems like the perfect fit for me.
  2. NYU: New York University is often tied with USC for top American film school. It doesn't have the best financial aid packages though, which isn't good for any soon-to-be college student.
  3. UCLA: University of California, Los Angeles is often ranked in the top five for American films schools. It used to be higher on my list until i discovered that you have to be a junior in college in order to even apply to their film school. Also, your chance of getting into the UCLA film school is low, even if you already go to UCLA.
  4. Chapman University: Chapman's film school is slightly newer, but it is already ranked right along side of USC, NYU and UCLA. It's in the county of Orange, and a lot of the students are known to get hired by film or television stations almost immediately after graduation.
I also have Yale University and Columbia University on my list as my reach schools, and UCSD and SDSU as my backups.


Beyond grades, what motivates you to work hard at school?


I am motivated to work hard because I have a goal for myself, and that is to get accepted to the USC film school. I have been working my absolute hardest since the day I entered high school to, yes, get the highest grades I could, but I didn't want high grades just for the sake of saying "I have good grades". I shot for the best grades possible so I could get accepted to USC. I know that nothing is guaranteed and even kids with 5.0s get rejected from their dream college, but I am still motivated by my dream to go to USC and make a good life for myself doing what I love, film making.

Year End Reflection: Part One

What project was most valuable to you, and what have you gained from it?

The most valuable project for me this year has definetley been Ampersand. I have learned a lot about how I work with other people thanks to this project. I had already known that I tend to take a leadership role during projects, but I never realized how over-bearing I will often become. I realized fairly quickly that when a group of people all need to work on one computer, if I'm not the one actually using the computer, I get very stressed out and start trying to plan how to force the other person out of the chair so that I can work. I am really glad that I have realized this about myself because if I hadn't I would probably continue acting this way in both projects and in life in general. Since I realized this, I have already caught myself being a complete control-freak at rowing and at my house, so now that I know about this problem I can improve myself. I have already started by asking my teammates their opinions on smaller details such as if one layout should have a black box in it or not, and things such as that. I can only grow and improve from here.


What is your greatest strength as a student in a project-based learning environment?

I really enjoy doing hard work, especially when it comes to building something or creating a physical product, that is part of the reason why I enjoyed Ampersand so much. Since I knew that my Ampersand article would be going into a book that anybody could view, I really felt motivated to put my all into it. I wrote as many drafts as possible, not just the required amount. I also immediately asked to be a managing editor so that I could take on as much responsibility as possible. When I was chosen to be a managing editor, I was thrilled because I was getting the chance to work hard and create as great of a product as I possibly could.


What challenges do you face as a student in a project-based learning environment?

Whenever I work on a group project, I usually have a hard time listening to my group. I often get so hung up on the way "I want things to be done" that whenever my group members come up with an idea, I will often try to brush it off or find a way around it. This was definitely apparent during the editing process of Ampersand. I would occasionally ask my teammates, "Do you like this image better here, or here?" and I would try to take their advice as much as possible. But when it came to letting them do the editing themselves, I couldn't handle it. I kept saying, "I made that edit in the book, do you want me to make it on the computer?" and "I know how to do that. Move over, I'll show you". I have realized this problem, (basically I'm a control freak) and I am trying to incorporate my team-mates ideas more, but I still find myself trying to go with "my idea(s)" as much as possible.

Writing Refection

One of the first things that I had to overcome with my writing actually had to do with the subject I was writing about. I have always had an extremely hard time writing about myself. I always feel narcissistic when I write about myself, so I try to avoid it whenever possible.

When we were assigned the American Icons project, I quickly realized that I would have to get over that. I originally started off by writing a biography about my American icon, (Chris Thile) which wasn't the assignment. I had to constantly revise my essay, starting by slowly changing all sentences that said, "Chris Thile started playing the mandolin when..." to "I was inspired by how old Chris Thile was when he started playing the mandolin..."

To be honest, I still have a hard time writing about myself, but I while revising my work I figured out another way to write about myself without feeling conceded. I decided to envision myself as a character, rather than myself. I wrote about "Madison" as if I were a character in a story. This way, I didn't feel like I was talking about myself too much, so I didn't feel so awkward while writing.

Another thing that I had to work past this year was something that I have had problems with for years. I am terrible at writing endings for stories, essays, everything. No matter what I do, I always end my stories abruptly or strangely. I especially had problems while trying to end my Ampersand piece.

While writing my Ampersand piece, Buried by Work, I had a strong opening, moderate middle, and a complete dead-end of an end. I had to go all the way back to the loop, (which is when you re-visit the beginning of the writing during the end of it) in order to write my ending. My piece started where I was literally covered in piles of work, so I ended my story that way as well.

I feel that the loop has really helped me with my endings. I never thought that one writing tip would fix a life-long problem.

My biggest goal for my future writing would probably have to be really learning the meaning of "concerts, so pancakes". I will often write very strong openings to my writing pieces, but the rest of the piece will taper and eventually seem mediocre, (in my opinion at least). Because of the loop, my endings are now stronger than they had been, but the middle of my essays usually seems rather dull. I think that while it is important to have a strong opening, I need to work more on the body of my writing with in-depth revision and drafting.

Historical Reflections

If I could have anyone from history come to college with me, it would probably have to be Franklin D. Roosevelt. I would want him to be the dean of my school. FDR was a terrific leader that helped pull the country out of financial crisis during the Great Depression so having him as one of the top officials at the school would be a great thing, (in my opinion).

Considering the state of America's current economy, having FDR as a leading official of my college would be excellent. If there was concern over the financial status of the college, FDR could remind everyone that, "...We must lay hold of the fact that economic laws are not made by nature. They are made by human beings." The university wouldn't have to let the economy decide what their budget for the next year would be. FDR could lead the university by making budget cuts only where necessary.

During prep rallies or orientations for new students, FDR would inspire everyone to work their hardest during college. He was such an amazing public speaker, that encouraging the students would be easy. When addressing the students, I could see FDR reminding the students that, "...Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort." The students would be motivated to work together and make the best of their college experience.

Lastly, the final note as to why I would want FDR at my school is one that I think most people would agree with me on. During finals, FDR could gather the students, (or address them over the school's radio station if they have one) in order to encourage them to try their hardest and not to worry about their tests. During the chaos of the end of the year, (or semester) when everyone is worried about getting their homework done and prepping for finals, FDR could easily address the students and calmly remind them that, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".

Literary Reflections

As cliche as it sounds, I would probably bring Gatsby with me to college. I think he would be a business professor, (after all, I do want to minor in business). I would want him to be my business professor because he is self-motivated and has a good sense of money. He spends his own money in a seemingly lavish way, but he spends only what is necessary in order to achieve his goals, (in this case it would be winning over Daisy). If he wasn't trying to win over Daisy, he probably wouldn't spend much of his money at all.

Another reason why he would make a good business professor is because he knows how to make connections even though he isn't a very social person. I'm a fairly shy person by nature, so having a shy teacher that knows how to be assertive and make connections when necessary would be very helpful for me. Gatsby knows how to go to and throw a party, which is something I can't do to save my life. When you are in the business world, you have to learn how to go to professional parties in order to meet with people of power, (which is sadly a major part of the business world) and I personally can't stand going to almost any form of party, so having someone like Gatsby as an influence would probably be a good thing in that case.

Lastly, Gatsby is the type of person who doesn't let anyone, (except for maybe Daisy) get in his way. He believes in pushing forward and will achieve his goals no matter what. Pushing forward and not letting anyone stand in your way is a crucial part of business. I don't let people get in my way for the most part, but I'm not ruthless like Gatsby, (and to be perfectly honest I don't really want to be). But nonetheless his self motivation is inspiring and that is something that I admire. That is why I would want Gatsby to be my business professor.

Court Case

1. Summarize the facts of the case, as presented by the prosecution. Include relevant witnesses and testimony.

The prosecution would often refer back to the constitution. They continued to mention amendments 4, (the rights to search and seizure) 6, (the rights to a fair trial) and 14, (this one roughly mentioned minority rights) and they mentioned how the Senate Bill 1070 violated all of these amendments. They had a lot of other evidence, but the constitution was all that they really mentioned when talking to their own witnesses. When cross-examining, they would often ask specific questions about bills that the other witnesses signed, to see if they knew exactly what it was that they were supporting. Their witnesses were James Madison (played by me), John Adams and Raul Grijalva.

2. Summarize the facts of the case, as presented by the defense. Include relevant witnesses and testimony.

The defense had a slightly broader range of facts that the prosecution did. When cross-examining, they would often mention the faults of the witnesses they were talking to, (owning slaves etc.) rather than questioning them on whether or not the found the law to be constitutional or not. When talking to their own witnesses though, they mentioned things about how illegals had wronged them and how the law was helping Arizona, (since it would lower the number of kidnappings in Phoenix and Tempe). Their witnesses were Jan Brewer, Russel Pearce, and officer Collins who was killed by illegal immigrants.

3. What was the most significant piece of evidence, in your personal opinion?

I think that it was when the Prosecution turned around the white board and had the witnesses from the defense read off the 4th, 6th and 14th amendments, (asking where it mentioned that only illegals were protected). Whenever one of the witnesses would read that, they would realize that the constitution, (or those amendments at least) never mentioned that only American citizens were protected. After that, whenever they were asked a question about the constitution only applying to American citizens, they could only respond by saying "I don't know" instead of, "Yes, Senate Bill 1070 is unconstitutional."

4. What was the most significant argument made, in your opinion?

I think the most significant argument made was between Jan Brewer and Calvin. While she was trying to hold her ground, he ended up getting her completely tongue-tied because she couldn't answer a lot of the questions about her own bill. He asked her about if immigration was counted as a foreign matter and if individual states could make laws about foreign affairs, which she had to answer no to. Then he asked her where in the constitution it said that only American citizens were protected, and she said that it didn't either. So when he asked her "Is Senate Bill 1070 unconstitutional?" all she could say was, "I don't know the answer to that question".

5. What do you personally believe the correct verdict should be? Do you agree with the jury? Why or why not?

I agree with the jury, (partially because I was on the prosecution) but also because I believe that Senate Bill 1070 promotes racism, nationalism and profiling. It encourages police officers, and gives them the right, to question and search innocent people just because of the color of their skin. In my opinion, that is saying that profiling is okay, racial profiling is okay, and that America is the "top country" and nobody from the outside should be aloud in. Even if police officers are searching people of all races, in my opinion that is just being a bigot towards any non-American as if they are not human.

Grading

I think I deserve a 50 out of 50 points because I took my role very seriously, I did as much work as I could in the amount of time I was given, (I was called in as a witness a bit late in the game) and even when I was in Sacramento I brought, (and read) two huge books all about the constitution. I made sure I knew everything that I had to about specific amendments in the constitution and I made sure to stand my ground during the trial.

I did the following things very well: I knew my subject, I had an answer to almost every question asked with few exceptions, I took notes during the trial that I knew could help my lawyers and I made sure my point was made the whole way through the trial.

I could have studied outside of the constitution a bit. I was told to study the constitution so that's all I did. I learned a little bit about certain acts and things such as the Chinese exclusion act etc. but I can't tell you much about it because I wasn't expecting to get any questions about anything other than the constitution. If I were to do this again I would have looked outside of just the constitution a bit more.

World Wars, importance (H-History blog 1)

These wars were important because without them we wouldn't have the same level of protection that we do now. In an odd way, the amount of nuclear bombs we, (America) have pretty much guarantees us safety from large attacks, (since we can blow up the earth seven times).

Also, I personally believe that the dropping of the atomic bombs might have saved us from a third world war. The damage that we caused to Japan, (focusing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki) showed the world that if one country gained a certain amount of power, the rest of the world could be in serious danger. While the death of thousands of Japanese men and women was tragic, I believe that the display of power and lack of mercy shown by the Americans made other countries somewhat doubt how good of an idea it would be to attack one another.

Another good part to this is that countries are now realizing that it isn't a good idea to be completely militaristic. Japan in WW2 had basically been converted into a country-wide army. This is what made it "legal" for the bombs to be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since then, I am sure that many countries have gone against the idea of becoming completely military based, which gives people at least a little bit of freedom.

World War 2

I think the most interesting part of WW2 for me would have to be the new technology, (ie. new weapons). I'm not really sure why this particular subject catches my attention more than anything else. I did a project about the weapons of WW2 last year and I remember that the entire unit fascinated me. Last time though, I only really studied about the atomic bomb(s) that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This time around, I wold really like to study more about the other types of weapons that really became known during WW2, (perhaps something about the advancements in planes).

World War 1/2

1) I think that the most interesting part to WW1 and 2 would have to be the new technology that was created. I think that the new forms of weapons were part of what made the World Wars so different. Air planes, tanks, submarines, they were all new devices at the time that changed warfare forever. They created new means of transportation for ammo and reinforcements, whoever had the most of these machines often had a higher advantage than the others, (not always the case though) and it opened gateways to technology that we still use today.

2) I would like to know more about each individual country involved. I would like to know more about what their economy was like pre WW1, pre WW2, post WW2 and what the economy looks like now. I would also like to learn more about the individual countries exact involvement with the war(s). I know slightly broader details about both the economy of individual countries and their involvement, but I would like to know more detail.

3) These wars are/were important because without them, the Europe would be completely different geographically. For one thing, Austria would still be Austria-Hungary, there would still be a "Ottoman Empire" and Prussia wouldn't exist. Beyond geography, we also wouldn't have a lot of the technology that we have today. Many cars were designed after each of the wars since airplanes couldn't be flown out of Germany, (they turned them into cars). Perhaps most importantly though, a lot of European and Asian countries would probably still be suffering from either poorly exicuted Communism or Dictatorships. Italy, Russia, Japan, Germany, several parts of Spain and multiple other countries were suffering from Dictatorships. Without the World Wars several of these countries would probably still be unfairly ruled.

Semester Two; Blog Thirteen; Honors Novel Two

Jim Casey's moral philosophies guide the Joad family and the rest of the characters throughout the entire novel. His philosophies on sin and virtue being non-existent continue throughout the novel. His beliefs that all people are connected through one single human spirit seems to guide all of the characters to each other no matter what roadblocks may get in their way.

In the forth chapter, Tom Joad is walking home after being away for over four years. He sees a tree that will give him shade and heads to it. Along with the shade, he finds Jim Casey. If the novel follows Jim Casey's moral beliefs, then their meeting wouldn't just be coincidence. The spirit that attached the two of them together would want them to meet so it guided them together. There could have never been a tree there, or Tom could have gone past without saying a word, or when Tom sat down Casey could have left. But nothing like that happened because their spirits wanted them to meet.

As for sin and virtue, towards the middle of the novel a highly religious woman told Rose of Sharon that if she went to the dance party being held at the camp they were staying at, that Rose of Sharon would lose her baby because she would have sinned. In the final chapter of the story, Rose of Sharon goes into labor and gives birth to a still born child. But if what Casey said about sin was true, then dancing couldn't have been the reason that the baby didn't make it. At the end of the final chapter, Rose of Sharon meets a starving old man and gives her the milk produced for her baby, saving his life. Rose of Sharon and the old man were connected through one spirit. Her child died so that an old man's life could be saved because human spirit guided them together. It wasn't a time to feel sinful and morn for the loss of the child, it was a time to feel grateful towards human spirit for guiding too unlikely people to one place.

Lastly, Jim Casey didn't believe in God or the Bible because he didn't believe in stories, he just believed in people. In the story "The Grapes of Wrath" Jim Casey was proven right, there was no God. If God had existed, the Joads' wouldn't have been put through so much suffering. Like everyone from that era, they probably would have lost their farm with or without a God, they probably would have had to move out west and pick fruit. Tom being arrested, Rose of Sharon's baby dying, Jim Casey dying, not once were the Joads' given a break. However, all of these events did occur because of human spirit. The spirit between Tom and the man he killed was angry and spiteful, and Tom went to prison because of it. Human spirit led Rose of Sharon to a dying man, and she saved his life because of it. And human spirit caused Tom to go after Casey's killer because he loved Casey's spirit so much.

The entire book followed Casey's beliefs, but more than that it followed Steinbeck's beliefs. Steinbeck channeled himself through Casey, which led to the entire book being based around his religious and moral philosophies and beliefs. Human spirit connected all of the people in this book together, no matter how small a part they may have played. Tom was released from prison, left the state while on parole and still wasn't arrested which proved that there was no sin, so there was nothing to be punished for. The entire novel is based on these three beliefs/moral values:

1) There is no sin
2) There is no virtue
3) There is no higher power, just the spirit that connects all people.

-His upper lip was long, and since his teeth protruded, the lip stretched to cover them, for this man kept his lips closed.

-“Sure – I seen it. But sometimes a guy’ll be a good guy even if some rich bastard makes him carry a sticker.”

-“Now look-a-here, fella. You got that eye wide open. An’ ya dirty, ya stink. Ya jus’ askin’ for it. Ya like it. Lets ya feel sorry for yaself. ‘Course ya can’t get no woman with that empty eye flappin’ aroun’. Put somepin over it an’ wash ya face.”

-“It don’t take no nerve to do somepin’ when there ain’t nothin’ else you can do.”


Four:

-The first quote gives us an idea of what Tom looks like. The second quote shows that he is willing to manipulate people in order to get what he wants/. This could be used as an asset in the future, but it could be a problem if he uses it incorrectly. The third quote shows a bit of his personal beliefs. By reading this quote, we learn that Tom is upfront and unafraid to speak his mind. We also learn that he probably tries to keep himself fairly clean if possible. The last quote probably says the most about who Tom is as a person. It shows that he doesn’t think twice when he’s about to do something, (which might have led to his time in prison). He’s very go-for-it and believes in action rather than words.

-“Why, Tom – us people will go on livin’ when all them people is gone. Why, Tom, we’re the people that live. They ain’t gonna wipe us out. Why, we’re the people – we go on.

-“I'm a-gonna tell you somepin about bein' in the pen. You can't go thinkin' when you're gonna be out. You'd go nuts. You got to think about that day, an' then the nex' day, about the ball game Sat'dy. That's what you got to do. Ol'timers does that. A new young fella gets buttin' his head on the cell door. He's thinkin' how long it's gonna be. Whyn't you do that? Jus' take ever'day.”

“Tommy, don't you go fightin' 'em alone. They'll hunt you down like a coyote. Tommy, I got to thinkin' and dreamin' and wonderin'. They say there's a hun'erd thousand of us shoved out. If we was all mad the same way, Tommy-they wouldn't hunt nobody down.”

-“Thank god,” she said. “Oh, thank god!” And suddenly her face was worried. “Tommy, you ain’t wanted? You didn’ bust loose?”


Six:

-These quotes say a lot about what other people think of Tom. It seems that his time spent in jail really affected his family and friends. They all are worried that he is going to do something stupid or irresponsible that will get him thrown back in prison and they will never see him again. Also, since Tom would constantly talk about how he didn’t feel guilty for killing someone, I think that his family is now worried that he might kill someone again.


Seven:

-Protruding teeth

-Long, thin lips

-Broken nose/face

-New gray suit and boots


Eight:

The protruding teeth and long thin lips were mentioned mainly to show what Tom looks like, but I think it says a bit more about his character than one may think. Often, long thin lips are associated with snakes. When I first read the description of Tom Joad, I didn’t trust him because he had a sly, menacing look to him like that of a snake’s/ The broken nose/face is definitely important. Since Tom got his nose broken during a fight while on parole, he decided that he had to go into hiding until his face healed. As for the new suit and booths, that was important because a lot of the second chapter revolved around Tom’s new outfit. The outfit came from the prison that he had just gotten let out of.


Nine:

I think that the most significant moment in Tom Joad’s life was when he got into the fight that sent him into hiding. Even though his first fight sent him to prison, the second one had even more bad outcomes than the first one did. The first fight, (where he killed a man) sent him to prison and put him on parole which he barely cares about anyway. The second fight however, he broke parole, temporarily destroyed his face, got separated from his family, had to go into hiding, watched his best friend die, and multiple other problems. This moment was definitely the most important in his life, and not in a good way.


Ten:

I think that Tom is a little bit menacing and keeps falling into bad luck. He doesn’t really seem to care about what happens to him all that much, but it’s obvious that he cares about his family and wants to help them as much as he can. His religious views are similar to Jim Casy’s, (thanks to his influence0. I think that Tom is the type of person that will use people in order to get what he wants. He isn’t a bad person, but he does make bad decisions and doesn’t carry much guilt.

-“Thank god,” she said. “Oh, thank god!” And suddenly her face was worried. “Tommy, you ain’t wanted? You didn’ bust loose?”

-“On’y way you gonna get me to go is whup me.” She moved the jack handle gently again. “An’ I’ll shame you, Pa. I won’t take no whuppin’, cryin’ an’ a-beggin’. I’ll light into you. An’ you ain’t so sure you can whup me anyways. An’ if ya do get me, I swear to God I’ll wait till you got your back turned, or you’re settin’ down, an’ I’ll knock you belly-up with a bucket. I swear to Holy Jesus I will.”

-“Use’ ta be the fambly was fust. It ain’t so now. It’s anybody. Worse off we get, the more we got to do.”

-“If—if Tom comes—tell him we’ll be back. Tell him to be careful.”


Four:

-These quotes show that Ma Joad is a very head-strong, family oriented woman. The first quote shows how relieved she was when her son got out of prison. When she asked if he had broken out, I think she was probably thinking, “he missed me so much he broke out of prison!”. The second quote truly shows her devotion to her family. She believes so much in family values and keeping the family together that she would risk her family getting angry with her in order to keep them all together. The third quote shows how her values had been torn down a bit towards the end, since the chaos of the American economy had destroyed most people’s sense of self. The last quote shows how much she loves her son. For some reason, from the way she talks about Tom, I feel that Tom is probably Ma’s “favorite” child.


Five:

-“She sassy.”

-"Well, this fella don' want no hangin', 'cause he'd do it again. An' same time, he don't aim to bring trouble down on his folks. Ma - I got to go."

-“An’ she ain’t young, neither.”

-The whole group watched the revolt. They watched Pa, waiting for him to break into fury. They watched his lax hands to see the fists form. And Pa’s anger did not rise, and his hands hung limply at his sides. And in a moments the group knew that Ma had won. And Ma knew it too.


Six:

These quotes both back up how family oriented Ma is, but they also show what other people think of her, (she is the one that makes the decisions in the family). Rather than yelling at her or doing anything to try and make her cooperate, when Ma is swinging a car jack around Pa just said, “She’s bein’ sassy,” since he knew that he knew that he couldn’t do anything about it. And Tom had to convince her to let him go into hiding.


Seven:

-Heavy, but not fat; she is thick.

-Steel-gray hair.

Eight:

-These characteristics say to me that Ma is a strong older woman who has seen a lot in her life. Her graying hair shows her age, but her thick form shows that she can handle a lot. She seems like the type that probably got strong from carrying multiple children around at once. Her concentrated face seems like she is almost a matriarch type figure. Her chubby girlish hands seem to show that while she is older and has lived through a lot, she still has the spirit and energy of a young child.


Nine:

-I think that her most significant moment had to be when she started swinging the jack handle in the air, yelling about keeping the family together. I feel that this was the moment that we saw the true Ma. When she yelled at her own husband for the sake of keeping the family together, that was where we first really saw what Ma’s values were. She believed in nothing but family and keeping the family together. I felt like I got to know Ma during this scene, which is why I thought that this scene was so critical to her character


Ten:

-I think that Ma is the true head of the Joad household. Even though Pa is supposed to be the “man” of the family, I think that all of his decisions go through Ma first. I think that Ma is going to be a critical part in keeping the family together and somewhat sane. I think that Ma is a strong, independent woman who has strong beliefs in family values and the saying, “Family comes first”.

-Al Joad


Three:

-“Me work for Connie? How about Connie comes a-workin’ for me? He thinks he’s the on’y son-of-a-bitch can study at night?”

-“Say, Tom. You heard Connie talkin’ how he’s gonna study nights? I been thinkin’ maybe I’d study nights too. You know, radio or television or Diesel engines. Fella might get started that-a-way.”

-“Well, we could get a couple of beers, can’t we? Im jus’s a-ravin’ for a beer.”

-And randy Al, seeing he was being noticed, threw back his shoulders, and he came into the yard with a swaying strut like that of a rooster about to crow.


Four:

-The quotes really show what Al’s personality is. He’s a bit full of himself and thinks that he is more grown up than he really is. These quotes show how young he really is, since he is acting like the coolest person around, when really he is just a poor farm kid from Oklahoma.


Five:

-“He worked for a company. Drove truck last year. He knows quite a little."

-“You can’t, Al. The truck—We ain’t fit to drive that truck.”

-“Smart aleck like he is. He knows. He can tinker an engine, Al can.”

-“What’s he know? He’s just a squirt.”


Six:

-These quotes show two things. One thing that it shows is that Al’s family thinks that he is still very young and a bit too full of himself. The other thing that it shows is that they could make it without him. They realized that if he weren’t there to drive the truck, they would all be in big trouble. He is truly an asset to the family.


Seven:

-Young, sixteen

-Good at driving the truck

-Good at fixing the truck

-Cocky, (struts)


Eight:

-Al’s ability to drive and fix the truck became vital for the Joad’s survival. They had to travel from place to place so often, not to mention going from Oklahoma to California, that their old truck would brake down fairly often. If Al didn’t know how to work with it then the family would have been stranded on some roadside in Arizona. Al being young and a bit cocky might go hand in hand as well. Every time he fixes the truck I think his cockiness goes up a little bit more.


Nine:

-I think that the most significant moment in Al’s life was when he jumped into the truck in the last chapter and realized that he couldn’t get it to turn on. I think that this was the moment that he realized that he was being too much of a kid with his cockiness and needed to be a man. This led to him figuring out how to make a platform to save everybody’s things and to finally part ways with his family to stay with the woman he loved.


Ten:

-I think that Al is the type to start off as the sort of insignificant younger brother that aspires to be like his big brother Tom. As time goes on though, I think that Al starts to become his own person, and actually becomes one of the key supporting characters in the story. I think that Al is a good person, a little bit thick at times, but he is starting to grow out of that as he grows.

Semester Two; Blog Twelve

"Public Works Projects" were government run projects that were created to benefit the public. Some Public Works Projects were things such as the NRA (National Recovery Act) which gave the government control over pricing of products and insurance etc. Our current government is trying to do something similar because they want to set the prices of insurance and medical prices rather than have the hospitals and health care services set the prices. This project had been outlawed in 1934 though, because people felt that it gave too much power to the president. Another one of these projects was the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) which helped to provide jobs to people during the Great Depression. I also believe that Social Security counts as a Public Works Project.

I think that a new version of the NRA should be created because right now too many companies are being unfair with their prices which causes a problem for both the consumer and for the companies. If they keep changing their prices they are going to lose customers which would be a huge problem for the companies and would cause more places to go out of business. If the government made set prices for CERTAIN companies, (such as health care etc.) then a lot of problems could probably be solved, (and more people could get health care). Also, Social Security needs to be fixed. When it was first created Social Security was an amazing thing. Once the banks started giving out bad loans again though, there wasn't much "security" at all.

Honors Novel One: Cannery Row

In the book Cannery Row, there were multiple political and social issues discussed, from prostitution to theft, to domestic violence and multiple other topics. There was one issue though that the entire story revolved around-The Great Depression

Steinbeck first brings up the issue of the depression by talking about people who couldn't pay their tabs at the local grocery store, so they killed themselves. Suicide was an extremely big issue during the depression, so by bringing it up immediately within the first few chapters, Steinbeck shows his readers what the basis of the book is going to be about. Even before suicide is discussed though, the town "Cannery Row" is described in great detail, from the run down-abandoned canneries to the most profitable business in town-the local whorehouse. Just like he did in The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck shows his readers how the depression has effected the environment that his story takes place in through descriptive language and in depth character descriptions.

The first few pages of the book shows the reader how miserable the depression has made the town, the economy, and the people living in the town. The main characters of the story are a band of miscreants that steal from the hard working people of the town, who are having a hard time making it by themselves. The most profitable business in town is the local whorehouse, (which says a great deal about the type of people that live in town and the local economy) and the grocer rarely is paid in money and has a debt with almost everyone in town. The grocer has everything that a person could possibly need, but people were so poor that they would have to trade anything that they owned just to get the smallest things. This relates back to the depression because during the Great Depression, there was plenty of food/resources but nobody could afford to by it. Also, the grocer giving out tabs to people seemed almost metaphorical to the banks giving out loans that people couldn't pay back. In the end, the grocer ended up repossessing items like the banks did.

In the end, everything about the story Cannery Row relates back to the Great Depression one way or another. The grocery store is a metaphor for the banks that gave out bad loans, the abandoned businesses are literal examples of many towns at the time and "Mack and the boys" resembled what the majority of American citizens had become during the depression, (homeless/thieves). The madam at "the Bear Flag Restaurant" (the name of the local whorehouse) Dora, paid the debts of most of the people in town. This showed how not only did people not have money to pay their way, but that people had to pull together as a community to survive. Lastly, almost everyone in town either worked part-time for Doc, Dora or no one at all. Almost all of the factories in town had been shut down, (even Dora's Bear Flag Restaurant was shut down temporarily). The lack of work explained why so many of the characters in the story where either homeless or living in poverty.

Cannery Row completely revolved around the Great Depression. If the depression wasn't a main theme to the story, then there wouldn't have been a book at all.

Semester Two; Blog Eleven

Dear Mr. President,

Show them that they can trust you, keep your promises and make change. Have a speech speaking straight to the public, discuss your plans to take immediate action by making new policies and organizations, discuss the recession. This is no longer a subject that we can try to ignore, the people need to know what is going to happen to their economy. Speak directly to the people, then in front of the entire country request Congress's cooperation. Remind Congress and your people that a Country divided is a country sure to fail. Only together can we make America the great land it once was.


Lastly Mr. President, you must speak directly to the banks. This free-for-all they have been having with loans is ridiculous and must be stopped. If a 15% down-payment cannot be put on a home then the home should not be purchased. It is better for the bank to make a person wait a few years to get their dream home than to give them their dream home, take it away from them and repossess their entire livelihood. Laws are made for a reason Mr. President, it's time that we start following them.


Thank you Mr. President. I realize that you time is precious, so we must get to work immediately to save our country. I will do my best Mr. President as I know you will too. Thank you for your time.

Semester Two; Blog Ten

I think that The Grapes of Wrath definitely explained the pain that farmers went through during the dust-bowl. The entire time I was reading it I felt like my eyes were burning and I needed to cough up dust the entire time I read the first chapter, the description of the dust alone was so painful. I think that after chapters 1-4, you start to forget about, "Oh, those poor dust-bowl farmers" and you start thinking, "Oh, those poor people". The Grapes of Wrath makes you feel nothing but sympathetic, (for the most part) for every person in the story. Whether they are likable people or not, anybody who ended up losing their home due to the dust-bowl or any other aspect of the Great Depression, you can't help but feel sympathetic for them because they don't seem like characters, they seem real.

Honors History Writing One

Dear Mr. President,


I am writing to you because the country is in a crises. Th American people are aware of your efforts to end this "Great Recession" but they want to see more action. Mr. President you need to get Congress on your side. Without Congress, bills cannot be passed and progress cannot be made, Congress needs to be aware that by working with you instead of against you, only then can this recession end.
